SOULSIKAll of us? I started with a pair of Grados (which never get mentioned these days, despite their strong points) and a cheapie DIY amp. Standalone DACs and dedicated headphone amps were far from commonplace, and the HD650/K701/DT880 trio was still ruling everything unless you entered the crazy world of Stax and K1000s, Floats and Qualias... The Orpheus...
And then the LCD2 came along and ruined everything! Now nobody has any money! $1000 headphones are nothing special these days! Who wants electrostats? You need a $4k headphone! You need a $3k amp! I remember a ton of focus on that price when Audez'e (anybody remember before they dropped the ' before the e?) showed up with the LCD2. Now I have a $1000 amp sitting in front of me and don't think anything of it...
But in all seriousness, the bright Schiit sound and a good pair of Senns is a good combo though. Fun and easy to listen to without being too much of either. I can definitely support that as a starting point.

SOULSIKOh I know. I just wanted an excuse to complain about all of these $1000+ headphones that didn't exist back then... and mention Grado, since I do miss those things every once in a while.

SOULSIKDon't start out with Tubes. I wish I didn't start out with the Vali 2. Tubes are a pain in the butt and not a place to start.
