How to connect PC to THX 789AAA

more_vert
Hey there - I decided just to use the 789 as my computer dac/amp combo (until I can get a DAC). What's the best way to connect my PC to the THX 789. I've looked at a bunch of reviews and forums and I read how great it sounds, but nobody is specific on their connections. My soundcard has optical out...but I don't see optical in on the 789. Isn't it a DAC as well? How do you/would you connect your PC to the 789 without a dedicated DAC?

The THX 789 does not contain a DAC. I'd be surprised if the soundcard on your PC didn't have regular audio out connections. You're going to have to use them to connect with the THX 789. The sound quality of your soundcard will determine how good your setup will sound. If you don't have a top level soundcard, you'll find a marked improvement by adding an external DAC. Adding the $80 Drop x Grace Design Standard DAC is really all you need to do or spend.

Got it. Seems like that's a good DAC, with option of balanced output. What's weird is the DX3 Pro is $30 more, is also an amp but isn't balanced. Would it be a better DAC for SE performance? That might be a good option since it has bluetooth and I could grab it to plug into my receiver if I'm in the living room as on its own it would drive some headphones. Downside is I wouldn't be exposed to trying balanced. Hmmmmmm. Gut response is to go for the DX3 Pro then, if I'm enjoying this hobby upgrade at a later date to a DX7s or something. Given the existence of the DX3 Pro, I kind of don't see the point in the D50s. Am I on the right track here do you reckon?

luckywalesThe Topping does give you a lot of bang for the buck & is definitely an excellent option for an all-in-one 1st time solution. It even has line out's if you want to hook up a set of powered speakers to your PC. It won't have the power capabilities of a 789 but it will get the job done & won't require the added expense cables to connect everything together. At this point I wouldn't even worry about SE vs. Balanced.
