Monolith DAC/AMP or Drop 789 w/ Grace SDAC?

more_vert
I'm looking for some input before purchasing my first decently nice desktop dac/amp setup. I was initially going to drop the $500 on the monolith and be done with it, but I have a friend that has offered me his Grace SDAC for only $55. I could pair the Grace with the 789, and be under $400 out the door. My current cans are nothing special- AT M40x and Monolith m1060c w/ open back mod. That said, I plan on purchasing many different cans and growing the collection. I like the fact that the 789 is more powerful, but I like some of the features of the monolith and the fact that it's an all-in-one unit. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Appreciate the comments. The only other question I will pose to you is will I be sacrificing any clarify by using the SDAC instead of the Monolith's internal dac? The Monolith's features are nice, but certainly not worth giving up the flexibility nor the additional $100+ in my opinion.

jonathanpoeHearing differences between DACs is very difficult, despite what many say. They're minor differences at best. Save the money for more music or for something else you like!

Slater91Ended up rolling with this combo, and I couldn't be happier. The way I described it to my friend was, I know there are nicer setups out there that probably sound better, but my mind cannot fathom it. It's like knowing the universe goes on forever.

The 789 and deal on an SDAC, while waiting to see what happens with a stacked player or ‘balanced’ R-2R here, good play.

Go with the cheaper option. Offers more flexibility down the line should you decide to audition something else. I'm always in favor of spending less and buying your family groceries with the remainder.
