Seiko Skx007 vs Vostok Amphibia 420

more_vert
Hello, I am thinking of buying Vostok amphibia 420 or Seiko skx007 , how many years can I use without problems? How many years Vostok/Seiko watches can work flawlessly(robustness years) and which is better? SKX007 or Amphibia 420. I really care about my wristwatch. I mean, service and cleaning and protecting. But also I like camping, swimming and fishing etc. Please help me and which wristwatch is better. Thanks for the help and advice.

I don't think either is watch has a particularly great movement or quality control. But the SKX007 gets my vote. Love mine despite its flaws.

What many people driven by pure consumerist interest can't understand about Vostoks is the fact that this watch in its original form was NEVER intended to be a final product for wide civilian use. It is a MILITARY time control equipment, which requires an additional adjustments done accordingly to the field of further use. These additional adjustments were usually done by time control officer at the military base. If you don't have an access to such specialist then you either have to become one yourself and master the Timegrapher tool or buy high end watch (Vostok Europe, Amphibia Uber Compressor, Amphibia Turbina, or any of the K-series) which uses already adjusted and tuned Vostok movement. Vostoks in their original form are great watches, but it is more of a modders choice then final consumer product like Seiko.

Totally agree with everything you have said. With Vostok 2416b problem is inconsistency and quality control in production. If you are lucky, you can get a fantastic watch which is durable and fare more precise then you expect. but if you are not lucky, you will have a lot of trouble with it. But I must admit that in last few years they become much better in that area. Regarding Seiko 7SXX calibers, they are good, but not as good as their predecessors 7009.

I do construction for a living and I’m outside everyday in the northeast. I’ve used gshocks for the last 10 years with no problems. I got bored of looking at the digital display so I grabbed an skx007J for work to beat it to hell. It’s been almost a year and it’s still going and keeps good time. Hardlex does scratch easier than I’d like tho.

Veegee8In a way, if I couldn't have sapphire, I'd prefer normal glass to get a network of scratches on the crystal, rather than a hardened crystal that only gets one or two annoying scratches. If it's going to look distressed, let's go full distress!

My g-shock gulfman 8 years old :) I am happy with gulfman. Thanks for help, I am really confused because everyone says something different. Vostok fans fighting against seiko skx007 fans on forums... Amphibia and skx007 really hard decision.

Camping, swimming, fishing? I'd say go with quartz or maybe solar. Save the mechanical watch for the rest of the time. Not that there aren't mechanical watches that can endure constant dirt and water, but I believe you have to spend a lot more. I could be wrong.
But I know for sure that a $75 G- Shock will take everything you throw at it.

I have many Vostoks, and I have owned many Seiko's with the 7S26/7S36 movements including a 007. I know Seiko people are going to chime in and say you are nuts for considering a Russian Vostok over a Japanese-designed Seiko. I see the issue as more blurred than that.
I will start out with this. I have killed Seiko 7S26 movements. Two of them. Seiko fanboys want to believe a myth that the 7S26 movements are bulletproof, but it is a total myth. They can and have failed with daily normal use. The most efficient way to fix a Seiko cal. 7S26 is to buy a new movement entirely. They are that cheap to buy. Saves a watch repairer a ton of time.
Now Vostok cal. 2416b automatics also have a "tough" reputation. Yes it is possible to trash them too. They are made with looser tolerance and parts of rougher finish. That is the Russian way, and the previous Soviet system that the Vostok factory was created under. Truth be told, most USA watch repairers will refuse to touch a Russian watch. It fails, you will be buying a new one. But it may last a decade or more before it comes to that.
Now everything around the movement? Seiko wins, every last detail. Vostoks use an acrylic crystal that will need to have the scratches polished out regularly. Seiko uses mineral glass crystals that will not scratch nearly as easily, but will need replacement if scratched. Seiko uses a unidirectional stainless-steel bezel, Vostoks as made at factory use base-metal bi-directional bezels with no ratchet action. There are ones you see with an aftermarket stainless bezel that accepts Seiko bezel inserts (an online friend of mine created the first ones), but they still are bi-directional and no ratcheting. Russian bracelets are junk, you would want to replace it immediately. A Seiko bracelet that some 007's come with is actually pretty good. Seiko dials and hands have good lume that is almost the industry standard. Vostok lume is almost an oxymoron. You measure the glow time in seconds. Vostok crown action takes getting used to. Many people upon using one the first time assume the watch is broken due to the way the crown wobbles. The Seiko will work smoothly, but unfortunately you cannot hand-wind the watch (but you can hand-wind a Vostok).
My personal bias: I am no real fan of the Seiko 7S26 movements. There are better, and Seiko even makes some. I have some trust in Vosok 2416b movements, but I realize they are disposable in the USA, unless you hook-up with some eastern European immigrant watchmaker. For your purposes listed I would choose the 007 if a gun was pointed to my head and ordered to make a choice. But I really don't think either is the right tool for the job. I don't have a ready suggestion in the $150 range except for the Orient Mako II series (better movement than either watch you are looking at, rest of watch equal to Seiko).
