Using HD6XX with a Audioquest Cobalt

more_vert
Just bought a HD6XX and using it with a Audioquest Cobalt (directly plugged into my PC's USB). How much better would it be to add a dedicated headphone amp like a THX 789 in addition to / or instead of the Cobalt in terms of improving sound quality (its loud enough with the Cobalt)? Thanks!

If someone has both the Cobalt and the 789 - a comparison - especially with headphones like the 6XX would be really appreciated.

I don't have any experience with the Dragonfly, but in general what I have seen the 6xx responds very well to upgrades put in front of it. I think you would be very happy with the upgraded amp. If you have read reviews, people talk about how the 6xx scales very well. This is what they mean. It will grow with your system.

JimmybucketsGuess what I am trying to determine is the incremental improvement between using the Dragonfly Cobalt vs the THX 789. The Cobalt already costs $300 - will spending another $300 on the 789 give that much of a jump in audio quality?

With the 2.1V out those have, designed-in, it should be fine. Audioquest: "You can also use DragonFly as a traditional fixed-output source component (such as a CD player, DVD player, or Blu-ray player), connected to a standard input on a receiver or preamplifier. When used in this manner, DragonFly functions in fixed output mode, which allows the overall volume level to be adjusted with the audio/video system’s master volume control. For this application, both the music player’s volume control and the computer’s main (operating system) volume level should be set to maximum." Feeding to a more powerful SS will be an improvement, though not a lot different. Adventurous? My 300B is in repair, so back to 6V6GT, and it’s still wonderful. You do want to do the caps; still a nice budget solution. https://drop.com/buy/appj-1502a-tube-headphone-amplifier/talk/2140926 Or Something like a Bottlehead Crack. https://bottlehead.com/product/crack-1-1-otl-headphone-amplifier-kit/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5sr6mZK26gIVmQiICR1C-waxEAAYASAAEgIPJvD_BwE Or a Darkvoice.
