I'm a one-time kitchen-sink backpacker who realized that with kids in the trail, I've got to drop pack weight. By now I have a Shires Tarptent (and looking at 2P X-Mid), an EE Accomplice quilt, and Drop x Klymit couples pad, so I'm working on it. My older kids are preteens, so my 6 year old is really the only one that can't hold his own yet. My question is this: would I probably make good use of this pack, or am I likely to find it too minimalist, given my starting point? I include the possibility that it might be a partly grown kid who would end up with it. Thanks for any opinions! I love reading the other thoughtful answers.

This pack is best suited for someone who has a fairly lightweight kit (like yourself) and hiking for 2-6 days. The super light folks can get away with a smaller pack yet. This pack would likely be suitable since you do have fairly light/compact gear - my only hesitant is that if you are going to be carrying a notable amount of gear for your kids then you'd probably find it too small. It can handle the weight, but at 40L it's not that big so you wouldn't be able to fit too much extra stuff along.

dandurstonDan, thanks so much for your response. I don't plan to carry anything for my older kids, and the pack might end up being for one of them! So it sounds like overall it is probably a good option for us.
