Hi Dan, I have both the X-Mid 1P and 2P, and think they are great tents. I used the 1P last summer over about 15 nights, from Havasupai to the Sierra, and just recently on the Teton Crest Trail. Earlier in July, I used the 2P on a three-night loop hike in Yosemite. After the recent experience with the two (Yosemite/Tetons), I was wondering: what about a 1.5P version, perhaps with an inner floor width of about 40"? After the 2P, which is very spacious, the 1P seemed a bit cramped. But the ability to pitch in a smaller space came in handy (the 2P would not have fit in the space in which I pitched the tent one evening, and I would have needed to search further for a campsite). I've seen requests for solid or partial solid inners, for single-wall DCF versions, and earlier for 2P versions - but not for a somewhat wider 1.5P version. Maybe just enough to squeeze in two narrow pads, an adult and a child, or a person and a dog, or in my case simply a bit more room for a solo hiker. Also, I'll add that the lower pockets next to the doors on the inner, locations of fly vents, and loops on the inner floor to secure to the trekking poles to keep the floor taut are nice improvements on the 2P design compared to the 1P.

Thanks for the thoughts and glad you are liking the tents. With regard to the improvements on the 2P, we are working on bringing some of these over to the 1P. For example, the current 1P batch shipping now has been switched to the same tensioners as the 2P for better holding power on 2.5mm cord, and the inner connects to the fly with lighter 1.5mm cord like the 2P which saves a half ounce. A few other minor tweaks too. Some of the other differences like vent location and pockets are trickier because (1) I'm still on the fence whether I prefer the 1P or 2P style of vent and pockets, and (2) those changes affect the actual fabric pattern of the tent so it would require re-opening the core design to re-prototype that and re-figure out things like how best to fit the updated panels on the roll of fabric. Could be done, but would be an expensive R&D investment I'd only want to go there if the changes are big enough to be meaningful. That might happen at some point but hard to say when. As time goes on I'm always thinking of additional small things that could be tweaked, where eventually enough of them will pile up to make re-opening the core design worthwhile. Whether that's 1 year or 3 years is hard to say, and also depends on Drop's appetite for taking on that project. Regarding a 1.5P, as you say there is a large size difference between the two models, since the 1P is about average for a 1P tent, while the 2P is somewhat larger than average for a 2P tent. Given that large difference in size, we don't have a model that's ideal for someone who's needs are intermediate (e.g. one larger person, two small people, or 1 person with large dog) or for two people that simply prefer a smaller tent for weight and footprint reasons. If we did make a 1.5P, it's hard to know how many new customers we'd get. Some people would definitely buy it that wouldn't have bought an X-Mid otherwise, while others would have just bought the 1P or 2P where we end up dividing the same customers over more models. Hard to know if there is enough interest to make it worthwhile. I'd basically have to design that from scratch so it would take a big time and money investment. Hypothetically, a 1.5P would likely be about 77" wide (splitting the difference between the 1P and 2P) so it would be 10" narrower with a similar length. It would probably end up weighing 33-34oz. I will say that I'm aware there is a large gap between models, and am mulling over the options here. That could be making the 1P a bit larger so the gap lessens a bit, making a 1.5P model, or perhaps opting for a 1.5P if we do a singlewall DCF version. Ideally we'd have a complete range of sizes (1P, 1.5P, 2P), materials (poly, DCF) and styles (singlewall, doublewall) but then that's a lineup of 12 X-Mid's where we might struggle to sell the minimum batch size if we spread customers that thin. There's merit to all of those configurations, but at this point I'm not sure if Drop's appetite is there to introduce another model or not, and if so, which of those it would be. Likely it would make sense to go after a configuration with the most interest and least overlap, so probably a DCF singlewall.

dandurstonJust another anecdotal data point, maybe not that useful... but I recently ended up buying Tarptent’s Stratospire 1 because it’s in this Goldilocks zone where I can squeeze 2p on occasion but its mostly just a roomy 1p. I was really close to pulling trigger on xmid 2 but the large footprint is what kept me away for now. If I’m ever at the point where 2 people is the norm I’ll be back for sure tho 🤙🏽

dandurstonI know this comment is old but I just ordered a new 2p after deciding the 1p is just too small for me. I'd be all over a 1.5p. My LW pad just took up so much of the 1p and I'm a sprawler when I sleep. I'm not even that fat 6' and 190 but my arms, hands and feet hit mesh so much in the 1p bothered me during the night. Now I'm going to take the weight hit and have a palace to sleep in comparatively. The floor plan was the one thing I preferred on the lunar solo over the xmid 1p since it allowed a bit more space to sprawl. The Xmid 1p and 2p are fantastic tents thought and I'm looking forward to using the 2p a bunch, I do prefer it overall to the lunar solo.
