Today’s wrist check!

more_vert
Today’s Wrist-Check is a bit of a repeat. It’s my Seiko SNK803 - newly modified! I own 2 Seiko SNK models (803 / 809) that I’ve featured here before - see the pic below. I’ve been itching to slightly mod both of these watches for some time and I finally put one on the bench. It was a simple mod - all I did was swap out the stock hardlex crystal for a double dome red tinted AR coated  sapphire crystal, a fresh leather strap, and finished the mod by polishing off the matte grey sandblasted coating to reveal the stainless steel surface beneath. I’m extremely happy with the results and have already started working on my black dial 809 which will be paired with a blue tinted AR coated sapphire crystal and new black leather or black sailcloth strap. The pics below of today’s watch are off-wrist because I simply couldn’t get the best angle when it came to showing off the red tinted AR coating.

Like in the movies when the Librarian takes off her glasses, lets down her hair and suddenly transforms into a sex-poodle right before your eyes ;- ) Nice work!
What did you use to polish the steel? I've been meaning to do this for a while but never got around to it. Feels like a good project for right now. Also, did you use one of those typical watch presses for $15-20 on Amazon for the crystal?

JAoneIt ended up being kinda easy. The hardest part was getting the new double dome sapphire crystal evenly installed. Although removing the old flat hardlex crystal was quick and painless, I had to remove then reinstall the new double dome sapphire crystal twice due to misalignment. Buffing the off the original sandblasted grey coating on the case was straight forward and only about 20min's. The strap looks nice but I'm not crazy about the size, it's 18mm at the lugs but tapers down to perhaps 16mm at the buckle. I'm on the hunt for a wider strap, perhaps one thats notched to fit around the outside of the lugs while not tapering too much at the buckle.

RandyBrownGetting that kind of strap can be quite expensive, usually have to get custom made,or get a leather worker to adjust a strap you find , at least they may be able to seal any cutting work. but the watch looks good, probably worth it. Did you replace the seals if any and have it pressure tested, and when you replaced the glass does that require a glue? I haven't taken many watches apart but the ones I have seem to have glued in glass.
