I purchased and have used for close to 50 miles the Drop XC crown 60. I have really enjoyed it for the last year. I am very intrigued by this pack by Dan and would love to see an comparison of these 2 packs. At the price point it is and it being in stock might have to get it as a birthday present to myself just to see if I can continue to get lighter than my current setup which is still just above lightweight backpacking at around 21 # base. Thanks in advance.

The Crown 60 is more of a traditional backpacking pack in the sense that it has thicker padding an is a larger volume pack. The Drop 40 is smaller volume and can carry a lot of weight, but it's best suited for light loads and it doesn't spend as much weight on thick padding, but instead chooses to be lighter and offer on-the-go-access pockets like the shoulder strap ones and side "quick pocket" so fast/light hikers can keep moving. At 21 lbs base, you're likely best suited to the Crown. If you get that closer to 15 lbs and find you have a lot of extra volume in the Crown, then I'd look at switching.

dandurstonThanks for reply Dan. Thanks for the explanation. As I continue to hopefully backpack more and likewise continue to lower my weight I will definitely keep an eye on this pack for the future. Your support of the products with your name on truly inspires confidence in your “Brand”. Your resume speaks for itself. My most recent 20 mile trip on the NCT/MRT in Michigan the DD Xped 1p worked so well for me. Easy setup. My hike to camp started in rain and setup occurred just before sunset. I had more than enough room inside for my Nemo Tensor wife regular with a couple inches at top for extra gear. Vestibule very accommodating to my other gear. Slept with both vestibules closed bc of threat of rain and temps in upper 60s. Very comfortable enough ventilation with poles set at 130cm. Very little condensation if any in am. Stuffed very easy back into sack and enjoyed my coffee and breakfast on a bluff before hiking out. Would definitely consider the DD xped 2 p based on my limited experience with the 1p. Thanks again
