I’m new to backpacking and after borrowing a friend’s REI passage 1, I decided to buy my first tent. After days of reading tons of reviews, it seems like this is the tent I need!!!! a few questions: 1) I usually base camp and day hike from there, and it rains a lot here. If I take out the hiking poles to go hiking, won’t the collapsed tent transfer the water from the rain fly on to the inner netting and everything inside the tent? Any tips for how to keep things dry while stealing back my poles for the day? 2) some reviews mention that the next drop will have different stakes and cording. Any guess as to when that will that be? 3) I’m 5’5/120lbs. The rei passage 1 feels too cramped. How does the x-mid 1p compare to that tent? Or should I size up to the 2p? A number of reviewers mentions having trouble finding a footprint large and flat enough for the 2p, so I’m not sure which way to go... thank you so much! This looks like a fantastic tent!!!!!

Another solution for day hiking is to get a single folding pole, carbon or alu. Set up the tent with it and a single trekking pole and use the other one for dayhiking. It'll also serve as a backup for longer trips, in case one of your trekking pole gets broken.
1) Indeed if you collapse the tent while the fly has condensation on it, that could wet the inner. And if it rains heavily on a collapsed tent there could be issues like water puddling and finding it's way through the vent. The easiest suggestion here is to grab two sticks to use in place of the poles. The sticks won't fit as perfectly (e.g. non-adjustable lengths, won't fit into the peak grommets) so it's not as stormworthy, but they can easily prop the tent up. You can also use folding poles instead of your trekking poles if you think you might have a hard time finding sticks. 2) The next batch is expected closer to the end of the year. It will have thicker cord (2.5mm vs 1.5mm) at the four corners (it's still 1.5mm elsewhere to save weight) and a mix of stakes, but those things are easily changed on current tents. The current tensioners are rated for 1.5mm and it does hold pretty well, but in a major wind gust the thinner cord can snap. So folks trying to save every gram will like the 1.5mm whereas folks using these in harsher conditions will prefer 2.5mm. Since this cord is easily exchangeable and the tensioners are the same on both batches, if you prefer the 2.5mm cord it would be as simple as grabbing 2 yards of it at REI or any outdoor store (or online such as this) for a few dollars and swapping the cord. Similarly for the stakes, the next batch will have a mix of V stakes and ti hooks, instead of all hooks. The V stakes work better on soft soils, but will bend on hard soils, so which is better depends on your personal situation. Again, it is a small improvement but the tent itself is the same and you can easily pick up a few V stakes yourself if you prefer that style. 3) The REI Passage 1 has a fairly large floor for a 1P tent (a bit larger than the X-Mid) but may feel more cramped because it has less headroom, and because there's very little vestibule space. The X-Mid 1P mesh sidewalls on the inner with large vestibules beyond that, so you're nowhere near the fly on the sides, whereas the Passage 1 uses solid fabric for much of the inner walls and then the fly is right outside that (very little vestibule space), so it would feel a lot more confined. Certainly the area under the X-Mid fly is far larger (at least 50%) so that contributes to a more spacious feel even if the actual floored area is less. We've never had anyone at 5'5" / 120 lbs who felt the X-Mid 1P was too small/cramped. A few people have felt that way around 6'0" / 180 lbs but usually people find it works up to about 6'2". At your size, I don't recommend sizing up to the 2P because it's probably an overkill amount of space and that just adds weight. But if you really like your space, or might share the tent sometimes, then the 2p can make sense.

dandurstonThank you so much for your thoughtful and thorough reply! Much appreciated. I’ll be ordering the 1p then :)
