What headphones should I get to upgrade from M50x

more_vert
Hi, I'm looking for an open back headphones, and I don't allready own an amp or dac. After 2 weeks of research I have stumbled on many pair of headphones but I still don't know what I should get to have the best upgrade for my money. My budget is around 400 CAD$ (300 USD$). I've looked at the Dt 990 pro, He 400i, HD 599, and many more, but all I hear on internet is that they all are simlilar to the M50x, they all lack at some point in the sound. What are your recommandations for my price range that do lows, mids and highs the best. Thanks!

The HD600 is an often overlooked option, now at your price point. https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Open-Back-Professional-Headphone/dp/B00004SY4H/ref=mp

Whats the reason to upgrade from m50? That might give hint on what to recommend. My son uses only m50, he doesnt use 58x, 6xx, 4xx, any beyers, sony z1r, fostex th-x00 ebony, senn hd820, hd800s nor any other high tier headphones. Because he likes m50 (with sheep skin leather pads). If you dont find any faults with m50 then you are not missing anything. My father (80years old) also likes his m50. Instead of thinking to buy new headphones I would recommend that you visit your local audio shops and audition some of their headphones. Play the song you are familiar with and see if you feel a significant difference. Most audio shops will have senn hd600/650, AKG 700 series and beyer dt990s. Those are industry standards so you are less likely to be disappointed. and while you audition them you will realize which brand(sound signature) you like more. No matter how good the headphones are... it is your ears who should be the judge. Everyone's hearing ability is different. What sounds good to others may not sound good to you. and dont audition just once to make decision. visit the store at least 3 times.

Allright I will go with the HD6xx even if the soundstage is not amazing because I hear almost only good things about them! I allready have an amp at home, but I don't even know if it is any good for those headphones, just with my M50x I can hear an hissing noise when nothing is playing, is that normal ? Do all amps produce hissing noise ? Do you get hissing noise with your O2? My amp specs are here : https://manualsbrain.com/en/manuals/1107748/?page=24 do you think I would get good sound out of it if I can fix the hissing noise? Thank you!

You would probably not hear the hissbwith 6xx due to its higher impedence.
Try the HD6XX or HD58X. Watch some reviews on YT

I'm not a fan of the hifiman build quality and style
