Is the Magni Heresy and Modi 3+ powerful enough to drive the HD 800 s?

more_vert
I currently have Sennheiser HD660s running on a magni heresy amp and modi 3+ dac. Eventually when I save up the money I plan to buy Sennheiser HD 800 s because I am a competitive FPS player and hear they're the best headphones money can buy for that purpose and my question is will the current amp/dac setup I have support those cans or should I consider upgrading to the Magnius and Modius before purchasing the 800s? (I do listen to music often but the main purpose is for gaming)

As someone who has pretty extensively had the HD800 for loan, I can tell you it is far from the "best" for gaming. What you want is laser-like imaging, not the somewhat nebulous, stretched out nature of the HD800 stage. Stuff like Raal SR1a and Focal Utopia is "da best" in that regard. That, and don't bother using Utopia/HD800 on your current chain. HD800 needs very specific synergy not to sound like a trebly, hot mess (and it needs mods), and Utopia sounds particularly unimpressive from lesser chains. I would recommend for you a used Clear or Elex if you don't want to bother upgrading the rest of your setup.

I have similar equipment to what you have now ( heresey , modi 3 , drop/senn 650 ) and what you are asking bout ( magnius and smsl su-9 ) but no 800. The heresy is more than capable of driving the 300ohm load. The only real appreciable difference will be how loud you want them as the load is 2x as much as your 660s. How far do you crank up the heresy now with the 660s? It looks like you’re considering a full balanced solution ( Magnius + modius ) but it seems overkill to me for your use case. By all means upgrade if you want but IMHO you don’t need to..

NP. Have you auditioned a tube amp before? Especially an OTL with the senns? I’ve rolled a few on a Dark Voice 336 se with the senns ( recommend change out stock with NOS USA ), it’s a diff experience than the mags. I vacillate between the magnius and dv with those cans just depends on my mood I guess.

No I haven’t tried tubes before but I’ve heard they make the 800s more pleasant to listen to so I figured possibly in future I’ll think about something like that and interesting I’ll have to check those out thanks!
