Nice write up. I had time to blow off steam from this COVID lockdown in Cali. I modded my HE-35X. Didn't bother listening to them stock. Gutted it out and put in some electrostatic drivers. See the stock driver in the background.

MonkdoctorVery cool! I actually bought the HE-35X to put in some handmade planar magnetic drivers made by a fellow in the UK. Where'd you get the electrostatic drivers from?

MWildebeastThe electrostatic drivers are from Nectar Sound in Atlanta, Georgia. The owner sells an electrostatic headphone which he makes called the Pollinator. He's an exellent electricaI engineer and the nicest person to deal with. I designed and 3D printed the adapter ring to fit the drivers into the headphone cups. There are four lips or overhangs on the pad facing surface which the ear pads screw on to. Using Dekoni lambskin HE focus pads. The stock velour material irritates my skin. He also sells the PCB for an electrostatic amp which is open source. I built one and it is superb. Uses three dual opamp input and driver stage for the mosfet output stage. You can roll opamps to suit your sound taste. I am using three Burson V6 classic discrete opamps in it right now. Check out his website. Google search nectar sound. I don't know what the forum policy concerning internet site links.

MonkdoctorAwesome! I actually have heard of Nectar Sound, and I had an inkling that that's where you got them. I've seen his headphones pop up on r/AVexchange. Didn't realize you could get just the drivers by themselves. I gotta say, your 3D printed adapter rings look incredibly well integrated with the HE-35X. The planar magnetic drivers I purchased came from the one man operation Torac Audio. He's selling his drivers on Etsy, and in my opinion, there's a lot of bang for your buck. I would need to hear some of Audeze and Hifiman's higher end offerings though to really know how my pair stacks up.

MWildebeastClick on the Torac Audio link. That is a fantastic looking driver. What is the diameter of the driver? Did you have to make some sort of adapter to fit them into the headphone cups? I owned an Ananda and then trade them in for a the Ananda BT. Fantastic sounding BT planar by the way. Looks ridiculous when you wear them, but it's all about the sound quality. My drivers came out a pair of pollinator which I shattered on hardwood flooring. Rather then send them back to get fixed, it motivated me to learn Fusion 360 CAD software and 3D printing. Got to love how easy the latest consumer filament 3D printers are now to set up and use. My mod stats have good low end impact similar to planar, very detailed mids and highs without the sizzle you often hear in planar drivers. They sound most similar to my HD700 but faster and more detailed. Nectar Sound does not sell the drivers individually as you can imagine the liability of amateur tinkerer strapping on electrostatic drivers which have their stators energized with +- 400 to 500 volts and the diaphragm energized with 600+ volts. Homemade electric chairs would not look good on one's resume. I think the planar magnetic drivers are a lot safer to play around with.

MonkdoctorI'm honestly impressed with the level of quality that Matthew of Torac Audio was able to achieve. According to his product page, the diameter is 88mm. I designed and 3D printed a couple of plates, one that goes on the backside of the driver which secures it to the cups, and another that goes on the front side that the pads attach to. Glad to hear you were able to salvage the drivers! It would honestly be kind of cool if you could purchase just the drivers, but liability would certainly be a concern with those kinds of voltages. I can't imagine how much work it would be to write up a thorough enough release of liability form to purchase them for DIY use. I'll definitely have to look into Nectar Sound once the funds present themselves.
