FreeSync is a system rolled out by AMD. Instead of the conventional method of sending out either 60 frames a second or 120 at a fixed rate, FreeSync enables a system in which your screen only refreshes when a frame is sent by the GPU, very effectively removing screen tearing. FreeSync capabilities will only work on the monitor if you are using an AMD GPU. Similar to FreeSync is NVIDIA's G-SYNC, this has the same purpose/effect but instead operates with a programmable chip embedded in the monitor. So if you are buying a GTX-1080, and you want this capability, you'd have to purchase a G-SYNC monitor (which usually run about $150 more expensive then their counterpart), not a FreeSync. Both monitors will work as regular monitors with either, you'll just lose the special 'Sync' systems if you mismatch monitors and GPU.
