The photos seem to show make jacks at both ends. I would have expected a female TRS socket for input, and a male TRRS jack at output. How does it accept a typical earphone's signal?

It looks like its made for headphones with a detachable cable. The male end with the mic will plug directly into the headphones (where a standard Male-to-male cable would normally be plugged in), then the male end without the mic would plug into the computer / phone / etc. If your headset has a cable that can't be removed, this wouldn't work for it.
