Amplifiers have one job; amplify the incoming signal. Theoretically, they should sound the same assuming similar measurements, but unfortunately this is akin to using the logic of "oh car X has a faster 0-60mph time than car Y, thus car X is better." As to whether it's worth it for the HD6XX, my answer is that it absolutely is. The HD6XX is actually incredibly resolving in the mids and treble, and no modern headphone can touch the mids-to-treble smoothness that these have (not even the Empyrean, or the Utopia, etc). This also means they scale incredibly well; changing amps and DACs is very apparent through those headphones (the latter assuming a sufficiently resolving amp is used). If that's too complicated of an answer, just know that a desk amp outputs way more power than your phone or PC and the HD6XX will greatly benefit.
