HD6XX/HD650 and the "Sennheiser veil". I only have three amps to test: Drop THX XXX 789, xDuoo TA-20 tube-rolled and the Dragonfly Cobolt. These are also in ascending order of my perceived improved performance. Kinda funny that I find the little Cobolt to be the best performer. Yea I know this Q&A is for the HD6XX but they're supposed to be the same as the 650's. By unfair comparison I A-B them with HD800/S's and LCD-X which are $1500 headphones. I'm finding the 650's to be unlistenable. I've also switched to Dekoni leather pads. Better bass at the expense of soundstage but no change to the veil. In addition to the veil I find the midrange muddled and unresolved. Treble never gets too sharp but has no sparkle. Tonality is dark. Anyone else experiencing this and anyone have amp suggestions that make the HD6XX/650 really shine? I don't want to sell them as I perceive them as a legacy item, especially mine which is an original production in the 650 line which I purchased for a steal as one of my first high-end headphones years ago. I would get a new amp specifically for these cans if the amicable Drop community can help me find an amp that really, really lifts the veil, brightens the tonality, makes them more resolving and a pleasure to listen to. Thanks in advance for your input and advice. /Will
