Headphone amp with 80 ohm beyerdynamic headphones

more_vert
I ordered my first pair of audiophile headphones, the beyerdynamic 990 80 ohm version because the nice man at audio46 said it wouldn’t need a headphone amp. My Q is although it wouldn’t need it, would adding a headphone amp to my iPhone make the 80 ohm sound better? Or is it strictly for the 250 ohms that they have to use a headphone amp . I mostly listen to hip hop and r&b music >

The nice man from Audio46 is correct to a point. You can get away with just using your iPhone directly into the 990 but you'll be pushing the volume to about 85% to 90% to get a decent volume level. It won't leave you with a lot of headroom if you really want to rock out. Depending on what your actual usage will be, you might want to consider a separate amp. It's not a necessary addition but it will offer some improvements. My advice to you is that there's no need to immediately rush out & purchase a separate amp. Live with the iPhone/990 combo for a while. It might be just all you need. BTW....... You don't mention if you're asking about a portable or desktop amp.

I replied a couple of days ago but I guess I got distracted & never hit the "Post Comment" button! Anyway, I wrote that you should take a good look at the xDuoo XD05. It comes in several variations (Basic, Plus, Bal) but the Basic should be fine for your needs. If you want more flexibility & power, get the Plus but it's almost double the price. Fiio & iFi also make some very good portable DAC/Amps. Check them out as well.
