My first "audiophile" piece of gear would have had to been the Sennheiser HD 558. I was walking around a "Future Shop" (or was it Best Buy?) and I was looking around the headphone section and trying out a pair of Sennheiser momentum on-ears with a price tag of about $100 - $200. To see if I could hear the difference, I then looked at the next nearest headphones, the 558's. The price tag on the 558's had been removed so I assumed they were $10 - $50 at best due to the entirely plastic build, but when I tried them on, I was absolutely stunned at the sound quality and thought my hearing was bad for thinking they were better than the momentum's. In reality, my hearing was perfectly fine. I purchased the '558's within a week and have loved them since. However. The first "Aha!" moment as an audiophile was when I was sitting listening to my 558's out of my phone and I decided to go downstairs and listen to the same song through my dad's quality stereo (some Denon one, not amazing but quite good). I plugged the the 'phones into the jack and started listening to "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons, my favorite song at the time, since then my tastes have grown. The second I pressed play, I had that exact "Ah Ha!" moment when listening . I was amazed at the fullness of the presentation and the "aural waves" which raged outside my head, it was a stunning experience. Other times I had that classic "aha" moment would be when I was at some local Hi-Fi shops and was listening to a Hifiman HE-1000 through an Auralic setup or when I listened to some Totem speakers through a Mcintosh setup. All amazing experiences.
