You know what? I go to Vegas at least once a year for work and I've never thought to do this! I do tip quite a bit for services while I am there but never upon check-in. Thanks for the tip. I will have to try this in a few months! I'll let you know how it goes!

Vegas and the $20 sandwich trick
This is the first part of what I plan to be a multi post thread where I talk about some neat things about my favorite vacation destination, Las Vegas. The Setup When you get to your hotel, you'll line up at reception with the hundreds of other guests checking into the hotel. While waiting in line, take a $20 bill and triple-fold it so it's smaller than the size of your cards. Then "sandwich" the bill between your ID and credit card. The Gamble When you get to the front desk, they'll ask you for your ID and credit card. Hand them the sandwich, they'll split the cards up, note the $20 bill and nonchalantly leave it on the reception desk. They'll look up your booking and confirm the standard details about the check-in dates, room preferences, etc. Acknowledge that it's all correct, and then ask "Are there any complimentary upgrades available?" They'll acknowledge your request and say they'll see what they can do for you. The Suspense At this point, you'll probably see...

The most underrated Massdrop feature
Massdrop is an ever changing e-commerce site with a load of features. For someone that is new to the site, it is easy to get lost in the discussion posts of products. It is vital to ask questions about a product that you are about to purchase, but sometimes those questions do not get a response. Pictured below is where the "search" feature is located when you are looking at the discussion of a specific product (the yellow box). [image] Use it to search for keywords that are pertinent to your question. It is very likely that someone else has already asked the same question and gotten feedback. The search feature can also be used to sort through all the posts that have been created by fellow community members. Highlighted by the yellow box in the image below. [image] "Search" can also be used to sort through product reviews. [image] Notes: For anyone that is curious, I am using the Dark Reader Google Chrome extension to change the colors of the Massdrop page.

Emergency/Survival Kit
Hey everyone, I'm about to embark on a fun project to build a 3 (or 5?) day survival kit for my household in Berkeley, CA. The primary reason for this is to use when "the big earthquake" hits. I was wondering if people wanted to give me suggestions on cool stuff to get/include in the kit. Here are some initial thoughts: 1) I'm generally price insensitive (within reason). I wouldn't be surprised if this kit ends up costing $2500. 2) I'm against having a firearm (I accept there are some practical reasons for this, it's just not my thing.) 3) I plan to include a sat-phone in the kit 4) I want to plan for mobility, i.e. have the kits in large containers, but also have backpacks in there so I can pack up and move if needed 5) I'm thinking 2 separate kits in 2 parts of the house, in case one becomes inaccessible when parts of my home collapse. 6) We have 2 adults and 2-year-old at home. I've literally done zero research into this, going to start now, likely going to try to post...

How Massdrop Decides on New Communities
One of the most common questions we get is: “Can Massdrop launch an [insert name here] community?” With Hub, we wanted to create a space to have this conversation in an open environment, where all community members can provide their input. We’re looking forward to hearing from all of you about which communities you’d like to see most—and we’ll also be using Hub to test these out! With every community we add, we’ll learn something new that will help us do it faster and better the next time around. What makes a good candidate for a new community? Communities can really run the gamut, but each one should possess one or more of the following qualities: Communities requested by the members of Massdrop Communities we believe we can meaningfully help and grow Communities that can be split off from our existing communities New Communities Requested by Members Our members have a say in everything we do, so our top criteria for starting a new community is that it has been requested by you...

My original fidget spinner, and my new one!
This is a bearing I have had for the past 20 years. I've fidgeted millions of time with it. I always have to fidget with something. Or doodle when on the phone. It's just a bearing I picked up at university where I was studying Industrial Design (there was always lots of scrap stuff lying around); it's about 4 cm in diameter, 65 g, and is engraved as follow: 'Japan, Nachi, 6203'. I don't think it's a limited edition 😂 [image] With time, I was able to achieve unbelievable spin times of 20 to 30 seconds 😂. [image] Now, having just received the Giggle Hands fidget bought earlier here on Massdrop, I have to say, that's way more enjoyable than an old cranky raw bearing! Spins a lot longer, too! By the way I ordered three, and gave a purple one to my daughter, who seems to have inherited my tendency to fidget and doodle. [image] In the weeks since I discovered spinners exist, thanks to Massdrop, I already have developed an obsession about spinners and have now about half a dozen on...

What happened to the Cooking Community?
Did I miss an announcement? Just as I went on to finally pull the trigger on a rice cooker I'm noticing the cooking community has disappeared! Anyone able to update me?

On the Verge of Deleting My Drop Account
This has been brewing for some time. I think I've finally reached the end with Drop. Yes there is the occasional "good" deal that's worth considering, but these are becoming far too sparse and fleeting. And then there is the common issue of incomplete or even totally inaccurate information in the descriptions, wrong pictures, or basic pictures missing (like full shots of the rear of an audio component... duh!). And even when pointed out, no change ever seems to be made, as evidenced by drops that have been running for multiple years and still contain issues commented on the first time around. What broke this camel's back? The great (sic) deals available in the first ever Drop Warehouse "Sale." First item I checked, the Kyocera 12oz Travel Mug for nearly $30 shipped... which I believe is even more than when it originally dropped (pretty sure there was free shipping). Like I did before, I'll instead order another from Amazon for just $20. For me, it has simply become a waste of...

5 Things to Consider When Building a Deck With Fires of Invention
[image] Fires of Invention is the card that struck me as the most powerful card in Throne of Eldraine during the spoiler season. When it works you can be ahead by so much mana. But the difficult part about this card is deciding which other 56 cards to play. In this Standard format, I have almost exclusively been playing decks with Fires of Invention. Here are 5 things that you should consider when building a deck with Fires of Invention. [image] 1. Which colors to play The main versions of Fires of Invention that I have tried out so far are Jeskai and Temur. Jeskai lists usually play a lot of planeswalkers like Teferi and Narset and and is able to get value in the early game using them. I have found planeswalkers aren’t at their best in a Fires strategy because of the limited amount of spells you can play to protect them, but I think they are some of the better options out there for Fires. Teferi is just a really good card and the cheap planeswalkers are good to cast...

Women's Style Community
Drop currently features a Style community, but its products are often intended for men and do not feature appropriate sizes for women. Adding more women's clothing would provide more variety and sizing opportunities for customers.
