External frame is probably the biggest requirement for me, I have a child who will be joining me on the trail soon so I will be carrying for two. I will accept the extra pack weight to be comfortable carrying enough gear for more than a couple of days.
Pockets on the belt, at least one pocket on the bag that is accessible without removing the pack (large enough for jacket, camera, binos or somethint like that), hydration sleeve, water bottle pocket that you could reach, compression straps would be nice, upper and lower main compartments (completely separate), front loading would be a plus
As for brands Kelty, Savotta currently. Jansport and High Sierra birth used to make really good external frame packs. If I didn’t have to sell a kidney to afford them, Mystery Ranch makes the best heavy load bags.
