My personal collection started with a lot of closed-back headphones and so it wasn't until after I started adding semi-open and open headphones that I was able to think deeper on what to look for in closed-backs.
What I look for now in closed-backs is how "open" they sound in terms of soundstage and imaging. I find with cheaper closed-backs, not only is soundstage typically narrower with less differentiation in placement of voices/instruments, but when there isn't sufficient dampening, reflections off of the inner cup surface can make sounds linger longer than they should. I've not heard it yet but I have read many a review about the MrSpeakers Ether C sounding just as open and expansive as the regular, open version, so that seems like an appropriate theoretical benchmark a closed-headphone should strive for.
I do like the fact that bass response is typically higher in closed-backs than open-backs, but as time goes on I find this less important to the overall in relation to the overall balance of the sound signature.
As for headband, I do quite like the feel of the microfiber on the Focal Elex, and the alcantara on the Beyerdynamic Amiron Home.
Particular brands I like: Sony, Fostex and ZMF.
