You can set it up as you use it. I would recommend you get a sewing table for your machine. A table that will allow you to set it so it is even with the top of the table and at a comfortable height for you. You can really hurt your back and shoulders but just setting it on a table. Ergonomics are very important. I have the following Arrow Sewing Cabinets 601 Gidget I , Sewing Table, White have a counter height table for my cutting and putting the quilt sandwiches together.
