ABS or PBT?
more_vert
Ah the ancient keyboard argument what keycap material is better ABS or PBT. lets run through what makes each of these plastics special
ABS
  • cheaper
  • smooth
  • shiny (depending on the caps)
  • easily smudge able (depending on the quallity)
  • usually thinner

PBT
  • More expensive
  • textured
  • matte or semi matte
  • usually cannot smudge
  • generally thicker
Both PBT and ABS can have double-shot legends applied to them and both have been used in high quality sets.

So who wins? Well I sure don't know but you probably do and I want your opinions so please post which plastic is better AND what set you love most made from that plastic. :3
Or if you like POM caps that's cool too.

For me it comes down to this: If I spend the money for a good keycap set that I really like - I don't want to end up with a "shined" set after a year or two. Therefore even though there are many, many fantastic ABS sets (the new MT3 sets for instance) I can't make myself spend the money on ABS, and will pretty much always wait for PBT.

Nope. All the recent ones are ABS. As a fan of the PBT sets (/dev/tty, Godspeed), I wasn't sure I'd like the ABS version I got (Susuwatari). However, it is thick, double-shot, and beautifully done, and I really love it. I'm also considering "shining" the entire set on purpose, because I like that look and feel. Anyway, I've concluded that ABS can be acceptable (and I'm a very picky person) if done well.

The funny part is most PBT sets are cheaper than all the new abs drops coming out. Can get a good pbt for 40$.

I like the Aura/pudding style double-shot PBT keycaps. I wish someone would make a Dvorak set in OEM profile, or a DSA set though.

Sigh. If I was forced to pick one or the other: PBT. That said, it really depends on who makes the Keycaps. Some random AliExpress PBT better than GMK ABS? I don't think so.

I would say it depends on the build quality. Cheap quality PBT < high quality ABS high quality PBT > normal ABS.
It's all boil down to personal preference and build quality of the keycaps.

I've only ever used SA Carbon, which is ABS, and I like it so far so I dunno what PBT is all about yet. Regardless of material, double-shot is a must.
If only PBTs were in SA, I'd try them out. I don't know of any but feel free to let me know if there's such a thing.

there is such a thing... D: I'll keep that in mind should I ever decide to buy more keycaps. I'm waiting on the laser set for the time being. That set looks pretty awesome, thanks.
