GMK Nautilus Nightmares

search

search

Nautilus Nightmares takes place in the same universe as Nautilus, so it can technically be considered as a spin-off of Nautilus. The idea for this set surged some months ago, when Novelkeys shared with me their Nautilus deskmat’s design which portraits a giant cephalopod moments before its confrontation with Captain Nemo’s ship. It’s such a great design that some time after sharing it with me, I just asked if they could do a green version of it, and that’s when this new keycap project started.
Given how I’ve set up the kits, ideally I’d like to have the set dropping on Massdrop so if you are interested, don’t forget to vote for your favorite kits!

GMK Nautilus Nightmares Poll https://www.massdrop.com/vote/GMK-Nautilus-Nightmares

Proposed kits Nautilus Nightmares’ kits are slightly different than the rest of GMK sets and they have been specifically designed for medium and big group buys.
search

The Core kit is the starting point for everyone, as it provides great coverage for most people. You might have noticed that compared to other standard GMK base kits, Nautilus Nightmares have a smaller one, composed by only 128 keycaps, as ISO and numpad support have been moved to extension kits. The result is a Core that costs less, making it more accesible for the vast majority of people which then means that it would be more prone to reach new price tiers faster.
The kit includes dark gray Escape and Enter keys, dark green pipe and tilde, 1.75, 2.00, and 2.25 extra shifts; three extra spacebars in 6.00 (both center stem and off-center) and 7.00U sizes, 65% and 75% dedicated keys, stepped caps lock and control, scooped and barred homing keys, as well as HHKB R4 coverage with 1.50 Code keys.
A second  R2 1.50U Tab key has also been included on this kit. This eccentric addition allows you to potentially reuse some of your extra modifiers on another keyboard. For instance, you’d be able to cover a standard ANSI TKL keyboard and reuse the extra modifiers on an HHKB layout.
With Nautilus Nightmares’ Core you’ll be able to cover keyboards such as Nemo, Tokyo60, M60-A, TX60, Pok3r, Tokyo66, Zephyr, Kuyo, Canoe, TX65, Massdrop ALT, Clueboard, FC660, Singa, Octagon, Verne, TX-84, Massdrop CTRL, or the Masterkeys S.
Extension kits
search

The first of Nautilus Nightmares’ extension kits provides UK ISO layout coverage and it comes with two ISO Enter keys (one of them in the accent color), and an extra R1 1.00U ` ¬  for symmetry purposes.

search

The Numpad kit consists of 30 keys and aside standalone numpads, it extends Core’s layout coverage to 1800 layouts (Andromeda, TX-CP, Duck Jetfire), 96-key (Duck Lightsaver, Red Scarf III), and fullsized keyboards (Q100, Southpaw, Masterkeys L).The kit includes an extra R1 for standalone numpads, accent Enter, Escape, and Num Lock keys; and scooped and barred homing keycaps.

search

Composed by just 23 keycaps, the 40s kit is enough to extend Core’s coverage for forty percent keyboards such as Planck, JD40, Minorca, Sebright, Percebe or Preonic and split spacebar keyboards such as TGR Alice or VE.A.
Note: depending on how much interest is on this set, accent keys might be added. Also note that by the time this set reaches the Group Buy stage, 2.25U and 2.75U R4C spacebars might be available

search

A set of extra modifiers for your bottom row and enter key with custom symbols. It features the iconic Nautilus submarine, sea vortex novelties, and a pair of tridents.
Note: depending on how much interest is on this set, more novelties might be added.

search

This kit consists of a set of dark gray spacebars, ranging from 1.00 to 7.00 unit keycaps. Ideal for those who want an extra splash of color on their keyboard.
Note: by the time this set reaches the Group Buy stage R4C 2.25 and 2.75 unit keycaps might be available.

When will the deskmat be released? Or I def wanted in on the caps and mat but didn't want to miss getting the beautiful mat from novelkeys
So many nice keyboards in the renderings! Never heard of the Percebe, the Nemo or the Tokyo66 before. Where can they be bought? I know I missed the C70 drop, bummer. I also know that the Tokyo60 drop is currently live. And seeing that something like a Tokyo66 might exist already or in the near future makes me think if I should just ignore the Tokyo60. :-)
Looks cool, but can you bring back the original Nautilus? I'm just getting into this hobby and it is by far my favorite keyset I have ever seen!

After Nightmares
i want this!

Good.
Pls make this happen. Been waiting ages for a green set like this.
Possible to add a 1.75 r2 backspace to the 40s for us mini van folks?

December '19 still the estimate?
randomfrankp
Yeah, that's the plan.
Please make this a thing. I really want to invest in my first GMK set and I think that this would be the one
looks amazing the calm colors with the bright text when when will it be on sale ? im excited
The set looks gorgeous and right now, definitely my favorite as someone looking to build his first keyboard. Is there an approximate date for the first GB? Will we see any keys/novelties coloured with the accent of the text (mint colour)?
I need it so bad...
Pls make this happen soon.
Cant wait for this drop
I see you already commented on an Ergodox kit a few weeks ago. It's a little sad to me personally because Nautilus is one of my favorite Ergodox kits that I have. It's on one of my Ergodoxes at this very moment. It's true that there hasn't been a Massdrop group buy in some time. But I would like to point out that there are GBs elsewhere (currently live, BTW): https://kono.store/products/infinity-ergodox-keyboard And anyone can buy an Ergodox EZ at any time from: https://ergodox-ez.com/ That said, if the numbers are empirically lower for Ergodox than Planck, I can't really argue with that. I don't know how Massdrop and GMK work internally of course, so I no idea on pricing or MOQ. I suppose all I can say is that I'm a fan and I would buy an Ergodox kit if it was offered!

Honestly I'm fine with core kits including modifiers. Sure, you are essentially paying for keys you don't need, but that's pretty understandable for any less popular keyboard. I'm sympathetic to the idea that a larger core kit drives down costs for most other people. But I do worry that there is some misunderstanding about what Ergodox users actually want. I worry that "botched" kits as you say, with low sales, reinforce the idea that no one wants to buy Ergodox kits. The ideal kit will vary from person to person, but I agree with you that an Ergodox kit needs to actually provide all the modifier keys, and the sculpting has to match the alphas. (I personally like blanks or "thematic" legends such as PUSH and POP on Oblivion.)
I just want to add that I don't blame designers or Massdrop or anyone. If you look at it objectively, Ergodox users are pretty scattered, and it would be extremely difficult to find any sort of consensus. I think more Ergodox keyboard drops would definitely help boost numbers and bring the community together. Maybe more Ergodox posts and polls would help too?
Looks great. Have you thought about a Cthulhu set?
diggergig
Of course.
Zambumon
Haha, of course - who hasn't! Will be getting this deskpad for sure - it fits the theme I have always been hoping to see one day. XD
@Zambumon I really like the look of this, but would have to see some colour samples before joining. Will those be available here or on GH? Or are there other sets with the same colours for reference? Historically GMK has had a hard time achieving the desaturated look that's present in your renders. P.S. Personally not a big fan of these novelties, I like really simple ones. Maybe just a trident head, or an old airlock door crank. This wont stop me from getting the set though, still did an amazing job with this.
JohnsonMG
Samples will be posted when I start preparing for the group buy, probably in 8-10 months. I'll be using a standarized system with GMK which has given us extremely good results with Serika and Chocolatier and adjust the renders according to the color samples, and not the other way around.
Zambumon
That's awesome news, thanks for replying! Can't wait to see how it turns out.
@Zambumon this set is going to be awesome... but those deskpads are the shiz! Now I don’t know if I should join the GB for R2!
Ballpark on when this could actually be a thing. I've got some box jades that need some friends.
What color codes will these be. Specifically, will the space bars in the space bar kit be n9?
Load 1 more comment
Awesome. Been looking for some n9 spacebars lol
ensulyn
N9 spacebars will match with Serika.
Any chance you guys will sell the desk pad on its own?
Rockytopwiz
That's the plan, the deskpad is an extra so you don't have to get the set if you just want the deskpad.
A couple days ago I mentioned the idea of including an extra B on the 40s kit. My goal with it is to encourage more people with high-end split keyboards which have doubled Bs (such as the EM7, TGR Alice, and LZ Ergo) to have a good reason to get this kit and not skip it. For clarity issues, I've also been thinking about updating its name "splitboards and 40s".

Let me know what you think about this idea.

Ahh, that's fair. MOQ and lower cost are worthy goals!
deroanth
Correct. While the keys you've asked allow more play with some layouts, they don't really increase the layout coverage, which is more critical to the kit.
Question is Zambumon, when are you going to start producing keyboard cases?
Load 2 more comments
The PCB has been designed by Wilba, so everything in there is exactly as it should be.
Zambumon
Oh dear, you missed it again...
> alwasy.
That's what needed more care.
> always.
As someone who sands his 6.25 and 1.25 keycaps, the 6.25C keycap is very interesting, I wonder if they can produce 1.25C's too and whether the 1.25 keycaps could become C's?
Kaan
R4C (convex keycaps such as the standard spacebars) do not have legends. GMK is planning to add R4Cs 2.75 and 2.25 first, as they are used in many split keyboards.
Zambumon
Don't really care about legends, use 1.25 blanks shaved down to be ergonomic around the spacebar, R4C 1.25 keycaps would really solve a problem for me, using 1.25 DSA keycaps is an option, but almost impossible to match color with existing sets
Oh this is wonderful! And thank you-thank you-thank you for including a 2u shift key! Ive been looking for "just the right set" that has one of those and I believe this is it.
Starius
No problem.
I'm all over this, LOVE the colors. I'm always curious about the keyboards in your renders though, is the "Verne" an existing keyboard? Can I buy one today somewhere?

Mmm, that's too weird. Some people have said that 2018 has been "the year of the TKL" because of how many custom TKL have been made.
Zambumon
huh, I feel like I've just been seeing a lot of 65% and other non-standard layouts. Guess I'm not following the right sites :)
Holy hell. Just an incredible set. Nothing on Nemo though?
theyeargh
I'm remaking it with a 3mm plate sandwich mount.
Zambumon
MMy body is ready.
I really like this a lot. I like the eerie deep-sea Davy Jones vibe it gives off. would love to see some the novelty designs expanded upon and more caps - I like the designs that you have so far for the modifiers a lot and I want more.

I want all three of those...also, a pirate flag? some more pirate-esque things? Could make some fun hacker themes from this too! Either way, I'm sure whatever you come up with will be great. Can't wait to see!
Lefibonacci
Yeah, I'm all for a pirate flag or some kind of Jolly Roger insignia.
Please for the love of all that is mighty let us have NORDEUK/Nordic kit!!!

I'm not missing about import taxes, I'm from the EU myself. We recently did a group buy for GMK Chocolatier with an European vendor and around 8% of the sets were purchased by European customers.
Zambumon
Thank you for the insight. That does clarify the state of the market far beyond my casual observations. All I can say is that i hope that popularity of this colour does allow for additional sets to be offered. It's certainly captured my imagination. Good luck bringing it into reality.
Its like that one episode of Scooby Doo with the glowing diver and the graveyard of ships
Hi Zambumon,
ty for another amazing design, but its "missing" an Elvira keycap :) I havn't thought about that Lady for decades, but visiting this page, boom, it was there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prTextcQKKE
Cheers
Makami
uhhh, no.
