Also worth noting this is a common design in the hifi market for the reasons AJC mentioned

Those are the two 2.5mm TS (Tip-Sleeve) connectors of the nice included unbalanced cable. The other end is a 3.5mm TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) connector with a 6.3mm TRS adapter. Having separate connectors on each earcup enables heaphones to easily be powered by a balanced source with a suitable cable, i.e. 2.5mm TS to 2.5mm TRRS, 4.4mm TRRRS "pentacon" or XLR.

The same 2.5 mm TS connectors. The T+R+S connectors themselves all conform to a standard for size. Occasionally a manufacturer will make connecting a plug difficult by recessing the socket, but not in this case. The connections in plugs with multiple rings can be wired differently, e.g. for balanced audio or unbalanced with a microphone, which would only be a consideration for a cable and balanced amplifier, not this headphone.

The same as the older 2.5 Hifiman connectors. I ordered some Hart Audio cables at the same time I acquired these headphones and they work great. I use Hart to use whatever termination I need (balanced 4.4, 2.5, XLR, unbalanced 3.5 or 6.4)
