I'm with you on that!
I'm currently looking for an end game ( I hope! ) can which for me is going to be sub $1000. The Elear and LCD2C both are somewhat controversial in that there seems to be a love / hate thing with some reviewers. I've pretty much narrowed it down to the Aeon Flow Closed at this point. I just can't drop almost a grand on a new product that hasn't been reviewed yet and won't ship for months like the new Ether CX. Not saying I won't get them at some point especially if they turn out to be amazing but I just can't spend that much money on an unknown.
Currently got HD 598 ( gaming ), HD600, HD650, TH-X00 Mahogany and TH-X00 Ebony. The Ebony is my favorite and handles everything I listen to. I'm hoping the Aeon Flow Closed will be like the Ebony and a good all arounder for me. I got some M1060s for cheap about a month ago but I had to return them. I liked some of what they did but I couldn't get around the metallic sounding mids. They were good enough to make me want good planars though.
Stupid expensive damn hobby. lol

anort3Not just expensive, if you're not careful, you'll find yourself with $4-5K worth of cans in your hands and thousands more in DAC and amps. If you're not very careful, and can afford it, you can easily drop $10K in this hobby and not even realize it. That's like 30% down payment on a 3-series beemer :)

anort3I can tell you right now the TR-X00 Ebony is nothing like the AEON Flow Closed. They are pretty far apart tonally speaking. The Ebony is dynamic and punchy, the AEON is fast, with great extension and resolution on both ends. The Ebony is neutral/warm and I would call the AEON neutral/cold. I prefer the Ebony for my music tastes but the AEON has superior comfort. They both are very attractive visually. Same with build quality.

jaydunndidditI'm not really looking for the same sound signature as the Ebony as much as something different but as enjoyable if that makes sense. Something more analytical maybe. Tyell, formerly at Innerfidelity was comparing the Aeon to a 'super' HD600/650 if I'm not mistaken. That's also a sound signature I love. I appreciate your input though. What would be your recommendation in the sub $1000 range considering what I already have? I was considering the Elear, Aeon Closed and Open, the LCD2C and the DT1990 Pro.

anort3 I have pretty much the same as you I went with the focal elex from massdrop sub $1000 and saved and little extra and got the LCD-X creator addition ($1199) the creator addition doesn't come with the travel case and is $500 cheaper instead of the LCD2C. i love them both. i tried to fit them into the pic.

REVMADNice setup! I have considered the Elex but who the hell knows when it may drop again. I think this time around will be the Aeon. Probably. If I can ever make up my mind. I also considered the LCD-X that you're talking about ( no case, $1200 ) but that not only violates my self imposed $1K budget but I keep reading about QC issues with Audeze drivers. I should just get the Purplehearts and complete the trifecta of boom.

anort3I would go ahead with the Ether CX, the fun thing about getting a 1599$ headphone from a great company for about half the money is the resale is 90%-100% if u don't like it. Pretty low risk, maybe it will be what u are searching for. :)

anort3Nice collection you got there, from what I've gathered it seems like ZMF Eikon would be a nice upgrade over the TH-X00. Seems like Eikon just does EVERYTHING better, treble, mid, bass, sub bass extension, texture, sound stage....... etc..... everything. However it will break your self imposed $1K budget.
On a side note, would you mind helping me on something? I currently got TH-X00 Mahogany used for $400 CAD (about $310 USD), and I've been hearing everyone says Ebony is a lot better. But I can't find any used TH-X00 Ebony so if I buy it brand new we'll be looking at close to $700 CAD ($535 USD).
So the dilemma is that in my situation is the Ebony gonna be worth it considering I might have to pay almost double the price of my Mahogany? Or would you say it's close enough that I should just be happy with the Mahogany? OR if I'm gonna spend $700 I might well save up more and just go the next tier up (similar to your situation)?

HydeAppreciate it. I haven't been this indecisive about something in ages.
The Ebony makes MY ears very, very happy. So much that the Mahogany barely gets any head time anymore since I got them. I really should sell them but I loved them before I got the Ebony. I go roughly 50% HD600/650 and 50% Ebony for music. To ME $535 US would be a big yes.
The Mahogany has more of a bassy signature and maybe slightly more sparkle in the top end and if I only listened to EDM ( or rap/hip hop which I really don't listen to at all) then the Mahogany would be completely satisfying. However the Ebony is way more neutral. It's not neutral but it's way more neutral than the Mahogany. And the Ebony just has a rich, warm tonality that I absolutely love. I even prefer them for stuff like Agnes Obel, Lana Del Rey and London Grammar where you'd think the Sennheisers would have a huge edge.
If you haven't, check out Metal571's review. My opinion about them basically mirrors what he says in his review.

anort3Thank you for the response! I think I've seen his review a long time ago but I'll re-watch it again to refresh my memory. So you'd say it is a worth while upgrade of the Mahogany eh? Damn I guess my wallet is not safe LOL.
Talk about indecisiveness, I've also own the Denon AH-D2000 first, then E-Mu Teak but somehow I wasn't fully happy with it then I got the TH-X00 Mahogany and was quite enjoying it until I find out about the Ebony LOL.
Oh also I want to make a correction, it seems like ZMF Atticus would be closer in sound signature to the HD650 and TH-X00 Ebony, I think Eikon is the more neutral one.
Thanks again for the feedback!

anort3Ops so as I was listening to my D2000 I never realized how big the soundstage was, in comparison TH-X00 Mahogany's sound stage just sound really small.
Do you know if Ebony has a wider soundstage?

anort3Can you see sound difference between Mahogany and Ebony? I have ebony and looking to buy mahogany.

kimdeugThe Ebony is more neutral and to me, works for more music. It has less overall bass than the Mahogany but the bass is deeper and hits harder. The mids are slightly more recessed on the Mahogany and the highs extend slightly higher. Personally, I prefer the Ebony but the Mahogany is still a very good headphone.

kimdeugLOL I'm in the opposite situation as you, I have the Mahogany and looking to buy Ebony. But trying to convince myself that it's different enough to justify the purchase (since I already own D2000, E-Mu Teak, and Mahogany), that or if I should just save up for ZMF Eikon instead.

HydeI can understand your dilemma. In my case, I had made the choice and joined to Mr speaker ether cx drop. Only one headphone in my collection has yellow wood earcups is Fostex T60. Which i will turn in black ebony soon using wood stain oil and polish as ebony surface. I was thinking to match them with Fostex mahogany th-00, but changed my mind. Cheers from NZ. Kim
