The Casio ProTrek range offer very good watches. I owe a Casio ProTrek PRW-2500-1 and that all I need (altimeter/barometer, compass) to go hiking trekking, sea-kayaking, sailing... and stay away from a power socket for days, months, years. No GPS function though for those how desperately need one.
Though I own a Fenix 3 (because of my existing ANT+ sensors), I really recommend the Traverse. Has everything the Core has, plus GPS and breadcrumbs. Battery is rechargeable, and with GPS off lasts many weeks. If you carry around a battery pack like I do, it can even be charged while wearing.
I personally second @humphries statement re: the Suunto Core. Very durable in my use in alpine environment. The altimeter and compass have worked well for the 3+ years I have owned mine. Log works well enough. Easy to switch between functions as well as change settings. An additional plus is the battery is easy to access and easy to change.
I personally own the Suunto Core and used it in Afghanistan. It is a great watch, and very durable. the Altimeter and Compass prove very useful for you mountain men out there.
