My tier list:
  • CHEAP: Koss Porta Pro, less than 50 bucks.
  • Cheap Enough: AKG K240, less than 100 bucks.
  • Not so Cheap: Sennheiser HD599, less than 200 bucks.
Pick any of these according to your budget.
Who the hell added PXC550's?
I have no idea why the HD599 is on this list. It was definitely the worst over ear headphone I ever had. It had a warm sound with lots and lots of low - mid bleed which caused it to sound like a mudfest, a cable that was horrible and a proprietary locking mechanism. I somehow have this impression that the majority of Massdrop is just after the Sennheiser brand name regardless if they actually deliver.
I don't know man, I still use my HD598 for what.. 5-6 years? And the sound is very spatial and beautifully I warm, I've wanted to upgrade but haven't found a not so expensive match until today, I haven't experienced the over-amplified lows you say. I can't be a Senn fanboy if I have only one product right? Anyways, I voted for the HD599 mostly because I find the sound comparable to HD598 although the K240 are the really budget IMO
the 599's are legit the best option on this list, and even then, they aren't super budget friendly for someone that would be considered a "beginner"
This list is crazy. I just wondering how is OP understand the words "Budget" and "Beginner" when he suggested $500 headphone in the vote. Also, few crazy suggestions in the list by others too. For me: Buget headphone must be less than $200 (even less $100). Beginner is very subjective, so I don't want to go there. Koss Porta Pro is one of the best Budget and Beginner Open Back headphone. Massdrop is selling it for $37.99 as well. Koss Porta Pro is a freaking legendary and has many cult fanatics.
LOL SRH1840 it's not even close to be a "beginner" and even less a "budget" headphone, it was like $700 when it came out, these days you can buy it at around $500.
isn't Sony MDR 7506 closed back?
Shure SRH1840 ($500) classed as a "budget" headphone!! Huh??
Philips Fidelio L2
Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro?
