The Sennheiser MD-421 is probably my most preferred for toms, especially on the floors. In fact that mic is superb for horns and male vocals as well. That coupled with a Sure SM7b for underneath the snare, a 57 on the top, D112 on the kick (plus a subkick depending on the style). All of these mics can be utilized to record pretty much anything. I know Metallica used the SM7b for vocals for a while there, plus their also a phenomenal cab mic.
These are great mics to use in a home recording studio or a professional studio or on stage! The SM57 is great for the top side of the snare drum. The Beta 52A is great for the bass drum while the Sennheiser E604's are superb for the toms. These are four great mics to start your closed miking journey.

E604's are amazing for kick and under snares as well (We preferred them over the intended microphones) . I remember testing these in some sort of pack (I think Sennheiser e600 Drum Pack), and thinking "Wow can I just buy a pack of the tom mics?".
