Best setup right now is, I believe, the Valve Index. If nothing else, it has miles better controllers.
Honestly for the money, the portability, ease of use and upkeep I'd go with the quest or wait until HTC , Pimax or some other company comes out with their response to the quest. I know it has less games but more games are being ported every couple months and for the price and usability I think it's almost more worth it. there are no cables and ports to screw up and trip over that cost 50 dollars or more to replace. (this is what I mean by upkeep)

Should of put pimax too
As of Oct 2018, the best VR value for tethered PC gaming is going to be the Oculus Rift with touch controllers at the MSRP of $399; During launch, when Rift only came with an Xbox controller, the Vive was a much more comprehensive solution, but they're both pretty much on par now. The main trade-offs to consider now is that Rift demands more USB3 ports since it relies on external USB cameras, whereas the Vive lighthouse beacons need more space/separate plugs.
Not sure why everyone is going Vive, have fun with your weird wand controllers and tiny lens sweet spot
Is it worth it to pay more for an HTC vive or should I buy the Rift

But is it worth the extra money

Definitely the Oculus Rift, the controllers are much more comfortable and best of all it's cheaper.
i would say vive is a better and more immersive experience overall (tried both and own the vive)
What about the HTC Vive Pro that should be coming out in 2018?

It's MSRP is too high for most gamers. The oculus rift or HTC vive is your best bet for Vr gaming in 2018
