The 598 is starting to become my entry standard over the M50x. The M50x is better without an amp compared to the 598, but once you pump some power in, the 598 will blow the M50x out of the water.
Edit1: The Fidelio x2 has great sound and best overall bass between it, the M50x, and the 598. If you have an amp, I'd lean x2 over the 598 for better bass, but unamped go 598 as it has less bass strength it won't need the extra power like the x2 will for bass-heavy tracks.
I have both of these and would have to agree. 598s are more comfortable on my bigger head/ears. Sound quality is better in most aspects on the 598s as well. Bass is bigger on the m50x, but better quality on the 598s - tighter, less boomy. Unless I really want a lot of bass and/or need more isolation from the closed back m50x, I'm reaching for the 598s.
I have heard them both and the Sennheiser 598's are my preference by a wide margin. They are easy to listen to for hours, both in comfort and sound. The AT's are bass-heavy and muddy sounding by comparison...and not near as comfortable to wear.
