I've been team canon for years after switching from Nikon. Basically all of my lenses are from Canon and I think they make the best lenses in a price to performance ratio (and I think most photographers/videographers can agree).
However, after seeing what Sony did with the A7III and what Canon did with the 6D MKII, I switched over to the Sony A7III to give it a shot as the spec and performance to cost ratio is absurd. I am incredibly impressed and pleased with Sony's latest "Basic" mirrorless camera. It stands out amongst the camera community as the best full frame camera around the $2000-$3000 price point and it easily battles with Canon's more expensive 5DMKIV (I think $1200 more expensive?).
Canon is great and I've never had a bad experience shooting on any of the DSLR's they provide - and they make the best lenses too! But they've disappointed lately with innovating and pushing the bar forward and Sony and even some other less popular brands have released some things that are simply just better than Canon's counterparts.
In conclusion, I'm now part of Team Sony, for the features, quality, and innovation they've put out and for how it's been priced. I look forward to seeing Canon hopefully pushing their own bar in the next year(s) (and then I can use my Canon glass again without using converters).
Disclaimer: I have extremely limited experience with "less mainstream" camera brands such as Fujifilm, Panasonic (Lumix), and higher end brands such as Leica and Hasselblad.

JackGallagherThe problem is that Sony doesn't really have a camera in the 6D range. The A7's compete more directly with the 5D MKIV. I'd love to jump on a Sony for the better sensor, but when I factor in the cost of a Metabones plus the body it's easily in the neighborhood of the 5D. And that has me wondering if I shouldnt just jump up to that body.
Then there is Sony's wigged out nomenclature. I have no idea what all the different A7 versions mean. I just know that when I have used other peoples A7's they all look identical, but have wildly different features. Isn't it crazy to have 42, 24 and 16mp cameras with the same name?
This has been bugging me for about the past year. So I think I am either going to jump to an Olympus of Fuji mirrorless. Or just get another L series prime lens to quench my GAS.

CalaverasgrandeYeah that's what I'm saying - The Sony A7III has an msrp of $2000, which is the same price as the Canon 6D MKII.
The Sony A7III however, competes in performance with the ~$1200 more expensive Canon 5DMKIV and the Canon 6D MKII can't touch the A7III in basically every category.
I went with the Sigma MC-11 adapter as I've heard it performs even better than the metabones and is significantly less expensive ($200 or so). I also have a Canon sigma lens as one of my go to's and the adapter literally makes the Sigma lens work perfectly on the Sony, along with my canon lenses I've tested.

CalaverasgrandeA7 is the family of cameras. S is for video and low light performance. R is for resolution, as in "high resolution". The version without either letter is kind of an all-arounder and non-specialized. The roman numeral refers to the generation of that specific model/version.
