The AKG 702's are at a record low price on Amazon right now for anyone who is interested by the way!

I own the K550s. Would love a pair of the K551s for on the go (even though they aren't collapsible). The K550's sound is nice and clean and they work well straight from the smartphone. They do benefit from a good DAC and amp, but not as much as higher impedance headphones. They're also the most comfortable headphones I've ever worn (especially for those with glasses) and the sound stage is great for a closed back.
These bad boys aren't overwhelming with bass and have a really brilliant mid-range. You'll hear new things in songs that you've listened to a million times before. Would highly recommend these to anyone.
Hey Everyone,
The AKG K712 is live now. There's only 60 pieces available so get in while you can!

Still working on that K812 launch (there's been some shipping delays) and hopefully we'll be able to get it listed soon.

Now seeing here that there were only 60. It would have been nice to mention that in the description on the actual drop. Maybe just a minor oversight, no big deal though!
Any idea when said K812's will drop?

Hi Panerai388,
Hopefully within the next couple weeks. We're working to confirm the availability but as soon as we've got them in our fulfillment center, we'll launch the buy and let you know.
Thanks for asking!
Hi Everyone,
As of now, we're working directly with AKG to fill all your AKG based needs. Here's a breakdown of the top options with an explanation of why they're not viable options for a Massdrop followed by a quick explanation of why the K612 is viable and why we'll.... wait for it...
Be listing the AKG K812 very soon.
AKG K702 65th Anniversary Edition: This was a limited edition version of the headphone and there is no more stock available for you to purchase from AKG.
AKG K702: Price competition on amazon is already as low as it can be before vendors have to start subsidizing the sales (companies will purposefully lose money on a product if they need to move excess inventory). Buy it on amazon if you're fixed on the K702.
AKG K550: Interestingly enough, AKG separates this into their "consumer" line while the rest of AKG's high end (K701, K702, K612, K712, K812, etc) headphones are considered "pro headphones". We're working on expanding to the consumer line but AKG wants to see how much of the pro line you're interested in buying before they consider opening up the consumer end.
AKG K701: Same as the 702.
AKG Q701: Same as the 702. Anything with a Q in the model number is going to have the same problems.
AKG K712: This is 100% viable and we'll be glad to launch it... as soon as it's back in stock. Right now there isn't enough stock to make for a meaningful Massdrop and as such we're going to have to wait until the next batch comes in (shouldn't be too long).
AKG K612: Highly viable. There's stock available and the price is consistent and close to MSRP which means that we can offer a meaningful price drop.
Alright, and now for the AKG K812. For some quick background information, the K812 is AKG's newest $1500 MSRP reference headphone, and the first headphone AKG has produced in this price range since the legendary K1000. As of now, we've got 15 units of the K812 reserved with AKG . We'll launch the buy as soon as we receive final confirmation form AKG.
Massdrop is, for a long time, going to be the only place AKG is willing to offer the K812 below their $1500 MSRP because of the privacy and niche enthusiasm of our community. Pat yourselves on the back. Through your polls, votes, and purchases you've been able to impress the top execs at AKG and now they're willing to work with you.
Keep voting, keep polling, and if your finances allow for it, keep joining drops.
Note: Please don't post share this information outside of the Massdrop community.

Hi, I sent an email yesterday and didn't hear back. I thought I participated in the 712 drop and never received a confirmation email. Is it too late to place my order? Thanks, Hank

Hi Hank,
Sorry for the delay, feel free to shoot me an email (will@massdrop.com) if you haven't received a response and we'll get this sorted for you.
You all realize the Annie version was a limited production run right? It'll be near impossible to run a drop on a limited run product.
Yeah, these prices are completely wrong. Hope somebody fixes them so that the drop isn't for the Q701's to start from $570 or something ridiculous like that, when they're on Amazon for $220.
If they did a sale on the Q701's from their current price point on Amazon ($220) I would definitely buy a pair, as I'm sure many others would too.
Just picked up my Q701 for $220 on amazon
The K702 are far less than $539. I got mine on Amazon for around $320.

I believe that's just the MSRP, not the actual price
The Q701 can be had for under $250
http://www.amazon.com/s?rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3AAKG%20Q701

I picked the lime green because of its vastly expanded soundstage and warm but revealing tone when compared to the white and black versions sold under the same model number. Actually that's not true at all; I got it out of suspicion the color choice was Quincy Jones' sadistic joke on the Austrians.

Rumor has it the Q701's are just rebranded K702's. However, AKG are known to modify the drivers for some existing model lines without changing the number, so it is possible for (presumably slight) differences to creep in.

The Q701 is, sound-wise, identical to the K702 Anniversary edition (with only different earpads improving the K702 Anniversary's sound).
The K701 and K702 (non-Anniversary) are identical aside from the K702's detachable cable and different color scheme.
The K701 and K702 (non-Anniversary) headphones are light and airy, often criticized for not having enough bass.
The Q701 and K701 Anniversary headphones share the K701/K702's upper clarity, but both do a better (at least from my point of view) job with the lower end of the sound spectrum. They sound fuller, but don't sacrifice the benefits of the K701/K702 in the process.
The K702 Anniversary's earpads do a better job keeping sound in, they're made from a softer(?) foam material that better cups the shape of your head. You can read more about the K702 anniversary in comparison to the Q701 here:
http://www.head-fi.org/t/655082/akg-q701-vs-akg-k702-65th-anniversary-comparison-review
In my opinion, the K702 Anniversary's are at the top, the Q701's are just below, the K702 sits below them, just slightly atop the K701. That's with my preferences for sound, your own my vary.
Here's a comparison of the K702 (non anniversary) to the Q701:

Quick note I have the k701s and q701s and have swapped the EarPods and they are definitely something different other than the ear pads because it doesn't really change the sound much swapping the Earpads. The Q's still have their bass and the K still sound great and clean. I realize they are similar but it is definitely not just the pads
