It cracks because it is real leather. There is nothing wrong with that. You know when you are getting then you guy them. The ones you have mentioned at rubber and plastic.
Leather is king, in my opinion. They mold to your feet and last forever! The last pair I had lasted about 2 years, wearing them almost every day.

kernelcurryIf people are looking for a beach / poolside / active / recreational sandal, you can't beat the durability of the East Cape (gum rubber, neoprene, and nylon). They can take a beating, wash off nicely, and are crazy comfortable.
The leather is fine for hanging around the house, going to class, or walking around town. But once the leather cracks they're abrasive on feet. YMMV, but I got blisters and cuts once the leather cracked. I'll never buy leather again for recreational use.
For the new Rainbow customers, I just want to explain why Rainbow's lifetime guarantee doesn't cover water on leather... because it's a known problem. See "My leather sandals got wet, what should I do?" at http://www.rainbowsandals.com/customer-service/shipping-faq%27s
