I can't speak for Brother but I can say that large manufacturers do make a cheaper versions of their products for sale specifically in big box stores. They do it to meet the price points required to get on the shelves. The higher quality priced stuff is sold at a higher price (appropriately) via industry dealers. A great box that touches on this is Big Box Swindle by Stacey Mitchell.
In response to the earlier comment about machine quality differences depending on where you buy it... Why would Brother make 2 of the same machine, but one with lower quality parts? How does this help their quality image? I have heard that is a myth. I just don't know if I believe it. It has never been confirmed as far as I can tell. It sounds like a good story for a dealer to hold on to.
Having formerly sold Brother Machines in the quilt shop where I worked, I'm not a fan of these offerings as they are made for selling at the big box stores and are not close to the quality sold by dealers. I would save your money a bit longer and get a machine that is going to stand the test of time. If you are a serious sewist you will not be pleased with these in the long run. This machine is made primarily of resin or plastic insides as opposed to the more solid metal insides of a Brother machine from the dealer. If you are a smart shopper you can find a good deal through your local dealer.
