Who brings an axe but car campers? A foldable saw is much lighter and practical for wood processing needs in the backcountry.

hikeasaurPlease explain how you would split wood for a fire using a folding saw. And don't say by using a knife to baton, because that's not efficient in the winter when you need to process a lot of wood for camp fires.

hikeasauri believe that you need a dedicated tool for each job. of course you can baton with your knife just as you can make feather sticks with an axe
practicing bushcraft usually doesn't involve carrying a big backpack over long distances. so overall backpack weight is less of an issue. for overnight bushcraft trips i usually carry my fiskars X7 and Bahco laplander saw. with that combination i can easily process logs up to 12cm in diameter. for lightweight wood work i carry mora bushcraft black
of course i'm perfectly capable setting up a camp with just my axe, i've done it before for practice purposes but i believe that is more of a survivalist approach. you have to be able to do every task with every tool, but if you have dedicated tool for each task, it will take less time and effort to perform them

hikeasaurTo effectively process wood to keep you warm the whole night you shouldhave a full tang belt knife, a folding pocket saw like a silky or a buvking saw if your going in winter. Accompanied by a "pack axe" a 1lb to 2.5lb head with a 13in to 26in handel with wood grain running front to rear with no twists in the grain or you'll be buying at least another handel....

brmartin508You dont. You shouldnt have to split much. To save time and calories you should cut firewood into acceptable lengths that your saw can handel that dosent need splitting.
