1 Suggestion I can give to anyone wanting to start getting involved with a DSLR. Is do not get caught up with this brand is better. First yes there are things here and there but in all honesty when you first start with a DSLR is to get your hands on one. find what brand you like the menus and the layout of the buttons better. you can still get amazing images with just about any DSLR on the market as long as you learn how to use the camera to it's full potential and learn the fundamentals of photography and composition. So when you pick your first DSLR don't worrie about all the technical specs get a camera that fills right in your hand and you like the layout of the buttons and menus.

sgtdunawayi have heard that canons can be better investments for those looking to get into photography because they're compatible with both canon and nikon lenses

snazztasticmattim not sure about nikon lenses working on canon but i do know that all of your lower end canon lenses dont work on high end bodies. where nikon can use all of nikon lenses on any body.
I personally own the Nikon D3300 and i bought it mostly for the reasons Sgtdunaway was saying. the menus stay mostly the same on all of there cameras making it easier to upgrade later. However, by far the most important feature is the Guide mode in short it basically teaches you how to use the camera.
now please take my comment with a grain of salt i myself am a beginner as well.
