I'm not against these, but why do people want this if they have a smartphone? Is it just for people that don't have a good phone or what?

SlarkinThis is an audiophile community, I think it's obvious that low end built-in audio codecs don't satisfy everyone. It's the same as asking "why do you buy this if you have Crapple earbuds" or "why do you buy this amp/DAC/combo/media center if you have a computer with Realtek onboard audio?"

pauliunasSo... It's better quality plugs, storage for better music, and portable?

SlarkinNo, it's better quality of all the audio hardware in it. Plugs have little to no influence over sound apart from oxidation. Storage is just storage. No influence here. But have you ever wondered how those bits (1 and 0) are transformed into sound? No, they're not sent directly into headphones. They go through a Digital to Analog Converter (DAC), which makes a waveform, which is then amplified by an amplifier. Then you have a waveform to send to the headphones. The better the components, the better potential it has. Headphones are sometimes the limitation, though. Anyway, remember those arcade machines with 8-bit chiptunes? Ever wondered why they sounded so far away from real music? Yes, because they didn't have good DAC's. The speakers were good enough, but the DAC's weren't. So, to answer your question: if you compare the sound of the same headphones connected to a regular phone and then connected to one of these, the difference will be the same as connecting them to an old arcade machine with its "chiptunes" and a modern mp3 player. Only that a regular phone is nowadays better than an mp3 player, and these audio players you see here are so much better than smartphones.

Slarkinyeah, but you know, you won't hear the difference with Crapple earbuds or Nokia hands-free headset ;) you need proper audiophile headphones for it to make the difference, because the ones I mentioned don't even squeeze out the full potential of a Nokia 6100 or similar phone ;)
