are shoes like this recommended for squats and deadlifts etc or just better off going flat foot/barefoot.
I usually work out with bare feet.

pickanick@pickanick, your article doesn't actually answer @doge's question. It's a good article, but it talks about the Olympic lifts - I.E., not the squat or deadlift.
@doge - lifting shoes are great for the squat but not for the deadlift. Ideally, in the deadlift you want to be as close to the ground as possible - consequently, being prohibited from going barefoot in comps, you wear "deadlift socks". I know some guys who DL in shoes, but they are also the guys who wear gloves. Don't be those guys.
As far as the options here go, I use adiPowers (crossfit coach, weightlifting coach, recreational powerlifter) and my girlfriend uses Romaleos (competitive powerlifter, crossfit athlete). Both shoes are fan-fucking-tastic. Look, if they're on the stage at the Olympics then you can trust that they're more than good enough for little old us with our little old weights :)
The difference between the Adis and the Nikes is that the nike favors a wider foot and the adis favors a narrow one.
Regarding the other shoes: I'm told the Adidas training shoe (Is it really called the powerlife? wow) is pretty great for the cash. But don't wear goddamn "crossfit lifting shoes". These Reebok ones are crap. The inov8 ones are even more crap. If you need to be able to run around and do other things then you're NOT LIFTING HEAVY ENOUGH TO NEED LIFTING SHOES. Put on your Nanos, take 2 concrete pills and harden the f**k up. When you're wearing lifting shoes you want to feel like you've been bolted to the ground with four giant Dynabolts per foot. That's not comfortable. It hurts. Suck it up. Don't buy fake lifting shoes for fake lifters.
"But they're for CrossFit!" get out of my class
