I have the Synology DS1513+, and it is super versatile. 5x4TB drives in a RAID 5 is pretty darn good. Also you can "team" all of the NICs for super fast transfer speeds.
The Synology 1812+ has been replaced by the 1813+, why buy old tech?

Agreed.
Synology is the only choice
What are the chances they'll ever drop something like this? All they seem to do is drop $80 leather keyrings, handmade kickstarter tritium-filled buttplugs and other largely pointless little tchotchkes. Sometimes you'll get lucky and see headphones and DACs... But never computer equipment.
My 2 cents: Drobo uses custom firmware so it's not possible to simply get out the HDD and copy the data onto your PC if your unit fails. You have to order the same drobo unit: http://scottkelby.com/2012/im-done-with-drobo/ comparing synology/drobo:

Disclosure: I owned a synology not a drobo, and I was quite happy with the synology, sold it because I moved
I would like to mention that the Drobo and Drobo Mini are not NAS as they do not have network connection.
