The FreeNAS mini is priced at $1500! Compared to the Synology which is about $300-$350.

tom-fordI would suggest you check your facts before you make such statements. Or at least back up your commentary with sources rather than expect people to trust that you don't have some kind of agenda.

tom-fordIf you go to the manufacturer's website instead of restricting your research to Amazon, you'll notice that there are several options that are much cheaper than $1,500: http://www.ixsystems.com/mini/
Similarly, you claim the Synology is "only $300 -$500" but that's the cost of an /unpopulated/ Synology, which you directly compare to the $1500 version of the FreeNAS mini, conveniently neglecting to mention that the FreeNAS mini is /fully/ populated with 3 TB drives for a total of 12 TB of storage, compared with the Synology's 0 TB of storage for "only $500."
You get what you pay for, that's for certain.
