can we remove the NAS' that are <$500?
Does anyone know the status on this drop?
Got any updates Will?
Thanks MD. Can't wait for this to drop.
Synology really makes the best NAS. I have an 1812+ ans a 713+, both flawless.
Hello Everyone!
We've contacted every manufacturer in this poll and expressed your interest. Drobo is interested in discussing the details and we're going to be talking with them again soon.
Thanks for your votes and we'll keep you informed as this develops : )

Was Synology interested? I would really love to see a deal across their product line. Small (this poll) as well as the larger units 5-8 disk.
Should we consider the ioSafe N2? It's $600 diskless so that's why I'm not adding it to the poll, because of the description criteria, but I still think it should be considered. It is fireproof and waterproff, has 2 bays for RAID and JBOD, and uses Synology software

Just throwing that out there

It's worth adding. Drops tend to favor not the poll winners, but the companies that will give a good discount (on something for which there's sufficient demand). I would imagine the N2 would go under $500 in a drop, and if security is what people want, it looks like a very good choice.
Definitely interested in this buy... Will also like to use it for streaming media using plex.
I guess as long as I only use it for file storage and not running plex it doesn't matter what the architecture is.
I currently never transcode but what if I needed/wanted to? Would that make a difference as to which nas I should vote for?
I'm also noticing we have 2 contingents: a sub-$500 RAID1 group (that's okay with just 2 bays), and a group for multi-bay, more full-featured servers over $500. Since the poll-creator requested something under $500 (retail? final?), perhaps a 2nd poll should be created to measure the interest for a bigger NAS. I'd also be interested in hearing from people with more experience than me in this sort of system.

I agree. I didn't notice the $500 limit when I added the 8 bay unit and I cannot locate a way to remove the added option. Someone want to start a poll for 5+ drive units?
I've been coveting a Synology 4-bay for a while. Reason: I could start with 2 2TB drives in RAID1 (the ones on my desk) and gradually upgrade to 4 4TB drives for 12TB in Synology's Hybrid RAID by simply adding & swapping disks. (Presuming Hybrid RAID works the way I think it does. Otherwise I'd just to go RAID5, but it would require the big drives up front.) Models I'm proposing: * DS413j - $430 retail (Amazon $380), budget model, still feature rich, gig LAN port, USB 2.0 * DS412+ - $735 retail (Amazon $621), 2.13 GHz x86-compatible Atom processor, 2 gig LAN ports, USB 3.0, support for (modest implementations of) big-boy applications (mail server, Citrix, etc., etc.). If the drop consensus were for a 2-bay drive, I'd probably try to build a 4-bay server using one of the open source NAS distros. (But I'm very lazy in such matters.) http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/reports/7153/1/ I'd be upgrading from a trusty 2-bay external RAID enclosure from Monoprice, which I currently have served from a host computer. Can't afford the RS812+, but I wish these were expandable to more drives. We use the Drobo at the office and it's very good -- I've not tried to figure out it's features beyond simple storage.
Check this one out, already populated with 4 x 3TB.... http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=766456&is=REG&Q=&A=details iOmega ix4-200d. I use quite a few as Veeam backups, and a few as unc media servers.
I know it's more expensive but check out the Drobo5n, their smart raid system is really awesome and makes things incredibly easy.
Need a group buy for the Synology DS213. I think this is the model that balances price and performance perfectly.
