why buy raw denim? What is the attraction to the high price for them? Some filling in would be much appreciated

JulianRaw denim is mostly worn as often as possible and washed as rarely as possible in order to develop fading that is unique to the wearer. The higher price is attributed to a few things, mostly the country of manufacture and small production runs. It costs more to pay fair wages to skilled workers in countries such as USA and Japan, and as small production runs... well, you get the idea. Additionally, the (usually) selvedge denim itself, which is made on old shuttle looms, costs more to manufacture as its not as efficient to make as denim made on projectile looms.
What is the attraction? For me, it's having something different. The country of origin is important to me also, as in workers' rights, safe conditions, fair wages, etc. I can't reasonably choose where my TV or microwave is made, but it's pretty easy to choose where my jeans are made.
I could buy technically raw denim inexpensively, but it wouldn't meet the other conditions I have for my jeans and I just couldn't be as smug about it ;-)
