Headsets (especially "gaming" headsets) are generally overpriced for their worth, by having either the mic or the headphones be subpar. It's always a better idea to have a separate mic (there are attachable ones to take on the form of a headset) and your preferred headphones.

Agreed. Nonetheless we can not overlook the portability of headphones with built in mics. Think of these as sort of a supplement to your already preferred setup.

I suppose that's fair; I'd recommend to limit them to phonecalls where the bitrate drops either way and not anything where quality would be preferred like music or playing video games.
Though companies like Antlion fix the aformentioned issue, but needing an adapter to make it one TRRS plug and an extra separate cable can still be bothersome and not as portable.
