The Drop + grell OAE1 Signature headphones are finally here, and we couldn’t be more excited! It has been a long journey to get to this point. Together with Axel, we’ve shown the headphones at a number of shows, received feedback from trusted ears such as Jude Mansila of Head-fi.org, and tweaked the tuning along the way. The OAE1 Signature are collectors items and limited to 1,000 units in total. All Signature headphones are individually measured before leaving the factory and the measurements are included inside the package. The Signature version also comes with two high quality cables, a carrying case, and as the name says—the headphones have Axel’s signature on them. The headphones come with a 2-year warranty and our 30 day return policy applies to OAE1 Signature as well. One goal with this launch was to minimize the wait time until the OAE1 Signature arrives. The headphones are in production and expected to arrive to our warehouse mid-June, and ship shortly thereafter to everyone. We look forward to getting these into your hands! Edit to add: All orders, including international, will be shipping free! If you already purchased and paid for shipping, that cost will be refunded to you automatically.

I'm optimistic on these being a great headphone for gaming. I guess I will find out soon enough because I couldn't resist at the pre-order discounted price. *fingers crossed*

madamadaWe had almost all of last month to order. I ordered the first day. I wouldn't worry too much though they will probably make more after the "signature" version is out.

First thing I've ordered here since the Koss/ MassDrop ESP 9** electrostatic headphones. I still use those a lot. Hope the forward located drivers bring something new to the game. Go Axel!

BarondlaI got those from Drop as well! I ended up selling them, but just because too much gear! I enjoyed them immensely as well!
Heads up, I spent a few hours going back and forth between my HD 650 (same target FR as HD 6XX) and HD 800: https://drop.com/buy/drop-grell-oae1-signature-headphones/reviews/2954019 Before you read, I’ll emphasize that A/B comparing teases apart the character differences between headphones, and simply by describing them it may exaggerate the differences between them in your mind 😂 I can “get in the groove” with any of these headphones once I exclusively listen to them for awhile.
Something that I somehow missed but now I have to ask: earlier mentions of weight for the headphones were at roughly 270g, now it's 375g? Is it a typo or were heavier materials added?

Thanks. How did you like the soundstage for gaming?
(Edited)
PhinI put some notes in the comment under my review, but yeah these are going to be my new gaming headphones. Works really well with Sony’s Tempest 3D Audio processing built into the PS5, I have an old Creative Labs DAC/amp plugged into the USB port and the soundstage was more focused and able to expand than my HD 650 or 660S. Soundstage is definitely one of the OAE1’s strengths.

There has been mentions of Dekoni earpads to reduce the excess bass. Is there any ETA for those earpads ?

PiedPiperI'm also interested in the pads to reduce the bass to make them more neutral. Axel said in an interview at Munich high end 24 that there will be pads to add even more bass or reduce bass to make them more neutral and suitable for studio work. I also hope they won't be too expensive! considering Dekoni's ear pads can be from 55$-100$ and there's shipping as well...

There’s a spot on the lower mids where the OAE1 seems (for my ears) to have less volume than the HD 6xx/650, not enough to be a problem and it doesn’t have weird timbre either IMO. The HD 800 upper mids (~6 kHz) and treble is louder/more forward than the OAE1’s, but I actually feel the OAE1 is easier to listen to longer due to that, and there is more “air” in the OAE1 than the HD 6xx/650. I think detail is closely related to how well you can separate multiple instruments playing simultaneously (and the tiny cues that make soundstage and imaging more believable), the HD 800 may have a slight edge here but it might be hard to tell without comparing side to side; they both have a trait of allowing me to focus on something without straining to concentrate, while HD 650/6xx sounds more busy. it’s absolutely amazing how much the price has dropped on the Arya. I couldn’t tell what year vintage it was, but I saw an Amazon return up for bid two weeks ago for a stupid cheap price… I impulse bid on it for a bit, but because I didn’t know if a driver had failed or if QC had missed a short, I didn’t bid much, and I let it go once it was past my “impulse buy” range… it sold for $84 (local pickup). Thus, I still haven’t heard an Arya 😅 I have an HD 599 too, it’s great for meditative yoga background sound and I’ve pretty much donated it to my mom for that purpose, but by comparison the OAE1 will seem like someone (Axel Grell) washed away all the mud and brought the soundstage into clearer focus.
