SoundtoxinThat's a totally fair statement - but not all steel is created equal. Al Mar is known for their superior heat treatment process that is regarded as having better edge retention than pretty much anyone else out there using AUS-8. Most of the AUS-8 knives you will see on the market are made in China, but Al Mar is making these in Japan (for now anyway).
JonasHeinemanThanks for the response. I'm not a knife expert, so steel type is an easy metric of quality for me. I get really excited over any new S35VN knives, for example. I'll have to consider the people making the steel in the future as well.
SoundtoxinThere's more to a knife than the steel used in the blade. These are made by Moki in Japan, and you pay a premium for that, both in terms of the build quality and the exchange rate. That said, lately, they've been having trouble maintaining their traditionally high quality (search for spyderco and moki).
shimageYou sure these are made by Moki and not G. Sakai? Most mention of Moki is before 2013, I've got a fairly strong indication they come out of the G. Sakai factory for the last 5-ish years, but that's not something anyone advertises or talks about much and if you have better info that we do, please do let me know.
JonasHeinemanYou might be right. I didn't think Fadden would go back to G. Sakai after how they separated, but I don't have any inside information. Also, haven't really paid any attention to Al Mar since before 2013, really.
