I don't think clean up is bad but the then again 99% of the time my bottle holds only water. I try to clean my bottle every week with hot tap water and a bit of dish soap. The only gunk I ever see is around the mouthpiece, but that's expected and universal with any bottle. Yes, the internals/underside of the lid are complicated but as far as I can tell I have not had gunk or mold issues there.
