Show the plunger or no deal! I own one of these Bodum Press's and the plunger has plastic holding the filter and a silicone gasket around the edge. The gasket wears out and I've also had the plastic fall apart. AND this part cost ~$25 AND is not always available. Most modern presses use all stainless in the plunger now. So, I need to see if Bodum is up to date or living in the past with expensive a disposable replacement part.

CaitrionaThanks. That shows they still use the plastic plunging filter. Other brands are both cheaper, look and work as well, and have stainless steel mesh filtering.

noshortcutsI bought it on the last go around and everything seems to be working just fine. for some reason i think that it is steel mesh but i'm not home at the moment and I could be wrong, so i'm not sure. i'll have a look when i get back.

CaitrionaAnd, is it all steel mesh or is it a steel screen on black plastic with silicone gasket on the outside edge? .... the plastic and silicone can work for years but they do eventually fail.

noshortcutsyes, i just had a look and mine is steel mesh with plastic support and the silicone ring. It looks as though, as you say, it should last for years. I've had a look around and it doesn't seem to difficult to get a replacement if needed.
Have used mine for a couple of weeks now and really love it. Use it every day.

CaitrionaWell ours just had another catastrophic failure - the plastic holding the mesh disintegrated while plunging today's brew. This is the 3rd or 4th failure in 12 years daily use.

noshortcutsI’m no French press expert or nothing, but twelve continuous years of daily use and only had to replace a part 3 o 4 times in that time seems like a really good product. That’s approximately once every four years. That said I have never had any experience with a French press good or bad so I’m not really qualified to make any opinion.
