Ian, not sure if this would work with your ordering system but I can have these made with or without the flush metal toe, so people could choose their preference, assuming its possible on your end.

ojinsayes, to protect against wear. depending on your gait, the toe could wear out quickly, while the sole and heel remain fine. The metal toe plate protects the toe and assures it lasts as long as the sole.

ojinsaMetal toe taps help prolong the lifespan of the sole, as the toe often gets worn away faster than the rest of it. Some people love them and some people don't care too much, but one thing is sure - flush taps are way better than the tacked-on ones. Here's an example of poorly executed metal taps on a sad pair of G&Gs:
